Y3W: Daddy's New Job

Paul recently took a new job at a local greenhouse. So far he is loving it. Clara and I stopped by the other day to visit and get a tour.

It smelled so good there.

Like soil.
and sun.
and new life.

Love it!

Linking up:

Sock Caper!

There are a lot of single socks at our house.

Little single socks.

Clara-size single socks.

Whenever I fold Clara's clothes, I set aside the socks to pair and fold at the end. Inevitably, the pile of socks is gone by the time I get to them.

On Sunday, I was to the point where I didn't have any pink socks that had a mate.

So she wore miss-matched socks to church.

I knew Clara was carrying them off, but I had no idea where she was hiding them. I looked in all the usual places, and no socks.

So I was folding clothes last night, when Clara approached the sock pile with hands out and a sly grin on her face.

"Socks!" She exclaimed.

I grabbed them up before she had a chance to carry off the last of her socks.

She went off to her room, and I could hear her rummaging through the toy box. Then she came back with a little box that a set of books had come in. She opened it up...

"Socks!"

and there they were... all those missing, misfit, beautiful socks! She had crammed close to 20 socks in that little box.

Now her socks have mates!

...until laundry day ;)

-early- Foodie Friday {Broccoli Cheese & Potato Soup}

As you know, I love me some soup.

I had a bag of broccoli florets aging in my refrigerator that I needed to use up. I got the idea to make Broccoli Cheese Soup, but realized I had no cheese or milk in the house - 2 key ingredients to Broccoli Cheese Soup.

So we had pizza.

A few days later, I was talking with my sister, who recommended a great recipe for Broccoli Cheese Soup. I had since picked up a few groceries, so decided to give it a whirl.

It is a.m.a.z.i.n.g!

Here is the recipe I used: Skinny Taste Broccoli Cheese & Potato Soup

I have made lots of things from SkinnyTaste that have been good, so it was no surprise that this turned out well.

I didn't have any chicken broth, so I just used water and it still tasted great - there is so much flavor in this soup.

I wasn't sure if I wanted potatos muddling up my luscious soup of broccoli and cheese, but it is a welcome guest.

and the BEST part about this soup? I got to use my favorite kitchen appliance... my IMMERSION BLENDER!!

My soup made more than 4 servings, I think I got 6. I probably used more veggies than recommended. Still tasted amazing. and all the leftovers got eaten up - not 1 drop of this soup was wasted!

Clara loved it too! I had put some in her little bowl and set it on the table to cool while I got the rest of our supper stuff ready. When I turned around, she had crawled up into her chair and was shoveling it in. Apparently she liked it!

This soup is great - try it out!

Yummy V-Day Treat!

I had a bit of a Valentine’s Day emergency.

OK, not really. It was an emergency to me, but most others would have said, “oh well!”

I didn’t have a treat for Clara to take to daycare for Valentine’s Day.

It was the night before, the roads were crappy, and we live in the middle of nowhere!

And I haven’t purchased groceries in weeks.

Seriously… weeks.

I scrounged through my cupboards until I found all the ingredients for my old standby… Puppy Chow!

I whipped up a batch, put it in baggies, attached the cards… DONE!

So to share the love, I’m going to give you my top-secret recipe for puppy chow.

(cue ooo’s and ahhh’s)

Puppy Chow
1 stick of butter
1 cup of peanut butter (I don’t actually measure… I hate measuring pb… it just sticks to the cup anyway, so I take a big spoon, make a really big swipe in the jar, and dump it into the pan :))
1 bag chocolate chips
(melt these ingredients in a pan over med heat, stirring constantly)

8 cups (or 1 box) or Crispix cereal
(pour chocolate mixture over cereal in a giant bowl and mix until everything is coated)

Powdered sugar
(sprinkle some powdered sugar in the bottom of a paper bag (or I use my Tupperware Mega Bowl). Add the coated cereal. Dump in some more powdered sugar. Shake! Add more powdered sugar and continue to shake until the cereal doesn’t stick together and all is coated with white)

Eat it :)

They're BaaAAaack!

The mice that is...

Looks like we've had more visitors. This is my Carhartt barn jacket that was hanging in the hallway. That's right, HANGING... they had to climb up the wall or something to get at it. Thankfully no nests or hitchhikers in the sleeves or pockets. Still gross though... Good thing I know how to sew, otherwise this jacket would awfully drafty!

Getting to Know You - Valentine's Day Style!

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would share a little more about Paul and I. I found this post on a blog I follow {My Attempt At Motherhood}.

So here's a chance to get to know me a little better - Valentine's Day style!

1. How long have you and your significant other been together?
We have been together for 7 years and married for 5. Our wedding day was 2 years and 1 day after our first date.

2. How did you meet? {What's your "love" story?}
We met the summer of 2004 when I was working as the Wabasha County 4-H Interim Program Coordinator. Paul was on the fairboard. I’m sure we met before the fair at some 4-H event or fair-prep, but the fair is where I really remember noticing him. He always seemed to be around the office or offering to help with something. We even had supper one night together… pizza at the 4-H Foodstand :).

3. If married, how long have you been married? If not, is this the guy you hope to marry? {do tell}
We have been married for 5 years!

4. If you are married, where did you get married at? Big or small wedding? If not, where would you like to get married? And will it be big or small?
We got married at my home church and our reception was at a hotel ballroom in a neighboring town. We had around 350 guests, so I guess that would be considered a large wedding.

5. Do you have any nick-names that you call one another? Do share!
Not really… Paul calls me “mames”… I refer to him as Tall-Paul.

6. Name 3 things you love most about your honey.

This is hard because I don't know that I can pinpoint 3 things...
1. I love the way he smells.
2. I love his cute little butt.
3. I love how sometimes he just makes me laugh.

7. Tell us how he proposed? Or your ideal proposal?
It was December 2nd and I was home at my parent’s for the weekend. (I was living and teaching in Rushford at the time). We went out for supper with my parents. When we got back to their house, we watched a movie. He had brought along my Christmas present, which wasn’t really that weird since Paul CANNOT keep a secret or keep a gift a secret. After my parents went to bed, he asked if I wanted to open my present. So I went in the kitchen and opened it while he stayed in the living room. It was a teacher tree ornament that lights up. The box said, “It sparkles”, which I read to Paul with a laugh. He responded, “it doesn’t sparkle as much as this!”. I went around the corner back into the living room to ask him what he meant and there he was, on one knee, holding the ring. I asked him what he was doing, and he responded, “asking you to marry me?”.

8. Is he a flowers and teddy bear kind of guy for v-day, or strawberries, champagne, and rose petals?
Uh… none of the above. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve gotten flowers, and jewelry… but I’ve also gotten baby chicks for a gift!

9. Are you a sunset dinner on the beach kind of girl, or pop a movie in and relax on the couch?
Depends. Sometimes I like going out, sometimes I would rather veg on the couch.

10. Tell us one thing you'd like to do with your significant one day. If you could do anything? Go anywhere?
Not sure about this either… I LOVE to travel – Paul, not so much. I think I could probably talk him into a beach vacation though.

We would like more kids. Some day....

11. Tell us what you plan on doing on this Valentine's Day.
Not a thing. We’re buying a house, which I think is gift enough! We might go out to supper though… we’ll see.

12. Are you asking for anything this Valentine's day?
Nope – see #11!

13. Give us one piece of advice of keeping a relationship strong and full of love.
Keep God in the middle of your marriage. Be honest with each other. Respect each other. Don’t be afraid to be silly. Don’t go to bed in someone else’s bed!

You Know It's Time To Move When...

you catch a rat in your bathroom at 3am.

Nope, not a mouse. A rat!

It was a night like any other, when I was awoken by the sound of splashing water coming from the bathroom. I figured it was one of our cats getting a drink of water. Then I realized both cats were in bed with us…

So I did what any strong, fearless, farm-raised, Midwestern woman would do…

I sent Paul to investigate!

All seemed well until I heard Paul scream like a 13-year-old girl at a Justin Bieber concert and the bathroom door slam!

“there’s a RAT in there!” was all he could choke out.

So what do you do when there is a rat trapped in your bathroom at 3am? You start talking about ways of getting rid of said rat!

Now you should know, neither Paul nor I are good at killing things – I have the B in my college Meats & Slaughtering class to prove it.

Poison was brought up. Very passive approach, but since we only have 1 bathroom in our house, leaving the rat holed up in there with poison for a few days didn’t seem like a viable approach.

We couldn’t shoot it, and neither of us seemed keen on going in there and clubbing it to death.

So what were we to do? Call the landlord of course! (who also happens to be Paul’s parents).

Paul’s dad arrived with his rat killing weapon of choice – a shoe. Paul’s brother also came along for moral support.

I stayed in our bedroom as I heard the stomp, stomp, stomp,… “where did he go?” Stomp, stomp, BANG! “Where IS he?” Stomp, CRASH, stomp… and then finally, “Open the door! He’s bleeding all over the place!” I almost had to giggle as I thought, “this is what my life has become! Killing rats in my bathroom at 3am!”

Sorry Mr. Rat. Don’t mess with the Luhmanns!

Now we just have to figure out how he got in the house... and pray he doesn't have any buddies!

And Clara slept through the whole thing :)

Update of 2012 Goals

We're one month into the new year, so I thought I would give you an update on where I am with the goals I made in January:

1. Get healthier - Doing OK with this. I have been drinking more water and trying to move more.

2. Move to an all cash budget system - still haven't done it.

3. Be better about making meals at home - We (well, actually Paul) have been doing awesome at this. So well in fact, that sometimes we have more leftovers than we know what to do with!

4. Buy a house - to be continued... :)

5. Get back into writing thank you and birthday cards - I have been much better at this too!

6. Have 1 date night a month – just Paul and I. - I think our trip to the cities for fair convention counted as our date in January. Need to plan something for February and put it on the calendar!

Overall I am excited to be making progress on many of these things. How are you doing with your resolutions? :)
